Charlotte Twins

1972

With the Hornets ultimately playing out their last season, Charlotte would be home to two teams, as the Minnesota Twins would relocate the GCL (Gulf Coast League) Twins from Sarasota, FL and rename them as the Charlotte Twins. The class A Twins were managed by Bob Sadowski, and their roster included players like future Minnesota Twins players Rob "Bobby" Wilfong, and Lyman Bostock (right photo). The Charlotte Twins schedule for the 72’ season was planned out  so that when the Hornets would play a home game, the Twins would be away, and vice-versa. The Twins faced opponents from both Carolinas, playing against teams like the Greenwood Braves and Gastonia Pirates.

While new changes in baseball were happening in North Carolina, the same could also be said for South Carolina. When the Major League Washington Senators relocated and became the Texas Rangers, the Greenville Rangers (formerly the Greenville Red Sox) would take the Anderson Senators place as the parent club's class A affiliate. Thus Anderson would become an unaffiliated team, and take on a new name as the Anderson Giants.

At the end of the season, the Charlotte Twins would finish in 5th place with a 59-70 record, (won 59 games & lost 70) half a game above the Anderson Giants, who were in last place. When the season was over, the class A Charlotte Twins would cease operations, and the Minnesota Twins would relocate the AA Hornets to Orlando, Florida.

Former Charlotte Twins and then current California Angels player Lyman Bostock was shot and killed as a passenger in a vehicle in his hometown of Gary, Indiana on September 23, 1978, after playing

against the White Sox earlier in the day. His shooter was sentenced

to a psychiatric hospital and released after seven months.
